Have you ever noticed how it’s second nature to send Salawat even when we say the name of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? Allah (SWT) sent Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the last and final messenger to direct humanity toward the path of righteousness. It was through him that Allah sent for us and completed the perfect religion, Islam. And one of Islam’s most virtuous and beneficial acts of devotion is to send Salawat (blessings) on Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). For Muslims, doing so is a reward in and of itself and goes beyond simply recalling. It is an integral component of our daily routine and a way to ask Allah (SWT) for his pardon and blessings.

Salawat is an Arabic phrase that invokes the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) blessings. From the beginning, the Muslim Ummah has sent Salawat to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is a means for Muslims all around the globe to recognize and show appreciation to Allah (SWT) for delivering us a prophet who has served as a source of instruction, knowledge, and inspiration.

The Qur’an states:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ ۚ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ صَلُّوا۟ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسْلِيمًا

Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace. [1]

(Qur’an 33:56)

From this verse, we learn that sending Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is not only a form of worship but also a reward from Allah (SWT). This verse highlights that Allah (SWT) and His angels send blessings on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and commands the believers to do the same. Hence, sending Salawat means expressing your devotion and admiration for the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and asking for prayers and pardon.

Rewards of Sending Salawat on Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

In addition to showing gratitude, love, and respect to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), giving Salawat is a method to ask for his intercession on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Who recites blessings upon me ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening will obtain my intercession on the Day of Resurrection.” [2]

(At-Tabarani reported this Hadith with two chains of transmission. One is reliable (Jayyid). See Haythami’s Majma’uz-Zawa’id 10/120 and Al-Albani’s Sahihut-Targhib wat-Tarhib 1/273.)

The rewards of sending Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are numerous. According to a Hadith, a person who sends Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will have his ten sins forgiven, ten good deeds added to his record, and his status raised by ten degrees. Furthermore, it is said that the person who sends Salawat on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once, Allah (SWT) will bless him ten times in return. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“He who blesses me once, Allah would bless him ten times.” [3]

In another instance, Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“If anyone says the prayer on me once, Allah prays on him ten times and removes ten errors from him.” [4]

Moreover, it is also reported that: Abu Talha told of God’s Messenger coming one day with a cheerful look on his face and saying:

Gabriel came to me and told me that my Lord says, “Does it not please you, Muhammad, that none of your people will invoke a blessing on you without my blessing him ten times, and that none of your people will give you a greeting without my greeting him ten times?” [5]

This Hadith highlights the immense reward of sending Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and encourages believers to do so as much as possible. Additionally, it is believed that sending Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) can bring about various benefits in this life, such as protection from harm and fulfilling one’s needs and desires.

Ways of Sending Salawat on Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Sending Salawat can be done in various ways, such as reciting the phrase “Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala aali Muhammadin” (O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad) or simply saying “Sallallahu alayhi wasallam” (peace and blessings be upon him) after mentioning the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not only a means of gaining rewards but also helps us increase our love for him. As we send Salawat on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we are reminded of his virtues, teachings, and life. We begin to appreciate his efforts in spreading the message of Islam, leading us to follow his example. Narrated Abu Humaid As-Sa’idi:

The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger ()! How shall we (ask Allah to) send blessings on you?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on his wives and on his off spring, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham’s family; and send Your Blessings on Muhammad and on his offspring, as You sent Your Blessings on Abraham’s family, for You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.” [6]

By doing this, we thank Allah (SWT) for sending us his final messenger, an example of mercy, compassion, and guidance for all humanity.
